Echolocation
July 21 – August 16, 2025
Opening Reception: Sunday, July 27, 5–7PM
Co-curated by Cynthia Winings and Josephine Burr, Echolocation brings together the work of five artists—Dana Clancy, Grace DeGennaro, Crystalle Lacouture, Isabel Riley, and Josephine Burr—who each engage in sustained, contemplative practices that reveal patterns both sacred and mundane. The exhibition draws its name from the biological phenomenon of echolocation: the way animals use sound to navigate the world. Here, it becomes a metaphor for how these artists use material, rhythm, and repetition to orient themselves within—and reflect upon—the larger forces that shape our lives.
Whether through geometry, gesture, or the layering of imagery and form, each artist reveals an underlying structure or resonance—a kind of signal—that connects the personal with the cosmic. From Clancy’s intimate painted collages to DeGennaro’s luminous sacred geometries; from Lacouture’s radiant drawings and protective bead installations to Riley’s enigmatic sculptural forms, and Burr’s tenderly hand-built ceramic objects, the exhibition becomes a chorus of transmissions—works that are both receivers and senders of quiet, searching inquiries.
As curators, we were drawn to the way each artist’s work acts as both signal and receiver—sending out inquiries, offering transmissions, inviting reflection. It has been tremendously inspiring to build this exhibition together. For Josephine, who is also a participating artist, curating this show is a natural extension of her own deep engagement with material and process. For Cynthia, it is a privilege to introduce several new artists to the gallery, and to bring their voices into this creative community.

Improvisations
Opening Reception Sunday July 27, 5 - 7PM
Hornung writes, “The work included in this exhibition reflects the two parallel streams of my studio practice- oil painting and mixed media work that combines drawing with painted paper collage. I think of them as separate activities, painting being "plastic" and collage, constructed.
I never make them in tandem but instead take occasional breaks from painting to devote time to collage. My approach to both is improvisational, an extemporaneous process that usually involves getting lost and then struggling to find my way home. The visual connections are obvious, but I don't try to connect them. It's like comparing singing to playing a musical instrument. For me, painting is like singing.”
